HCC is getting ready to open. No place has been checked yet, and no seal has been issued. These pages describe how HCC's checks will work.

HCC Academy · Opens January 15, 2027

Courses for the people who answer the question.

HCC Academy is HCC's course platform: a simple online training lane for owners and staff on serving halal-conscious customers well. Essential training modules, focused on real-world service at the counter, in the kitchen and on the phone.

It opens on Friday, January 15, 2027, about three weeks before Ramadan, with three courses and the Ramadan Readiness playbook. More courses and playbooks follow, each with its date shown before it opens. Each one opens only once its review is finished; if a review is not done in time, that course shows its new date here.

Three rules run through every course

Describe facts and name the source. Say what is in the food, where it comes from, and who certifies it, if anyone does. Never answer with a plain "yes".

"I'm not sure, let me check" is always welcome. A slow, right answer beats a fast, wrong one.

Religious questions go to the guest's own scholar, or to the business's certifier. HCC does not give religious rulings, and neither does your team.

  • 3courses and one playbook on opening day
  • 10 to 15minutes a lesson, one at a time

What it is, and what it is not

Practical training, not religious instruction

Many of the people your business serves care deeply about halal food. For many Muslim families it is part of their faith, not a trend, and they often find it hard to know what to trust. The Academy helps your team be clear about what you serve and where it comes from. It teaches the same idea that runs through every HCC record: say what was checked, how, and when, and never speak for the food itself.

  • Short lessons of 10 to 15 minutes, each with goals, a real example from a counter or kitchen, and practice questions with answers.
  • A short quiz at the end of each course. You can retake it. When you pass, the Academy gives you a completion record.
  • A one-page handout at the end of each course, to print and post for your staff.
  • Completion records help you show your team, and your customers, that you take this seriously.
  • Does not teach religion or give religious rulings. Where scholars differ, the course says so and leaves the answer to each person.
  • Is not a halal certification of a person or a business. A completion record is not a seal.
  • Never changes the outcome of a check. At Pillar and Keystone, the HCC staff course is one line of the Standard, checked like every other line.
  • Does not promise more customers or more sales.

The courses

Four courses, three on opening day

Each course has lessons you can take one at a time, a 10-question quiz with an answer key, and a one-page handout. To pass, answer at least 8 of the 10 questions correctly; you can retake the quiz.

    Ramadan 101

Ramadan changes the shape of a food business's day: lunch may get quieter, the hour before sunset very busy, and late nights busy too. This course helps staff serve guests well during the month and work well beside coworkers who are fasting.

    1. What Ramadan is
    2. The fasting day: dawn to sunset
    3. Service at sunset: the iftar rush
    4. The last ten nights and Eid al-Fitr
    5. Respectful greetings and what guests may ask
    6. Working beside coworkers who are fasting

Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin around February 8, 2027. Eid al-Fitr is expected around March 10, 2027, and Eid al-Adha around May 17, 2027. All three dates are approximate: the sighting of the new moon decides the exact days. The course's dates are updated every year, because Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year.

How your team takes a course

A name, a private link, and one lesson at a time

  1. You add each person by name

An owner or manager signs in to the business portal and adds each person who takes a course in its Training tab. A name is all HCC needs; an email address is optional. Your staff need no account and no password.

  2. Each person gets a private link

The portal makes a link for each learner, and you give it to them. It works for 12 months, or until their seat or your membership ends, and you can stop it or make a new one at any time. The course remembers where they left off.

  3. Lessons, then the quiz, then the record

Each lesson comes one at a time, with practice questions and their answers. After the last lesson comes the 10-question quiz: 8 right is a pass, and a learner can retake it. A pass gives a completion record with its own number, such as HCA-000123, and a page to print.

  4. Anyone can check a record

The completion record lookup shows, for a record number, the course, the learner's first name and last initial, the business, the date, and whether the record is current or expired. A completion record shows that this person finished an HCC Academy course. It is not a seal, it is not a certification, and it says nothing about any food.

The staff course and the Standard

Where the Academy meets the check

At Pillar and Keystone, the HCC Standard asks for trained staff (line OP-6). Every person who takes orders, serves, or prepares items in scope has completed the HCC staff course, which HCC teaches on HCC Academy. New staff complete it within 30 days of starting.

  1. Your staff take the course

Your dues include the course seats your level requires. Anyone who started within the last 30 days may still be in progress.

  2. The checker sees the records

The checker compares the completion records from HCC Academy with a current staff count by role. A business's own sign-in sheet does not count as a training record.

  3. The record shows the fact, never names

The public record states the result as a dated fact. No staff member's name ever appears on it.

How the courses are written

Plain words, kept in step with the Standard

  • From the published rules

The courses are written from the HCC Standard, the Seal Use Rules and the state rules in the Standard. When any of those change, the lessons, the quiz and the handout change to match.

  • Faith described with care

Before a course opens, HCC's Scholarly Advisor, once he is in place, is asked to review every passage that describes faith or practice. Where Muslims follow different views, the course says so and does not choose between them.

  • Not legal advice

Where a course explains a law, such as your state's halal law or the federal rules on reviews, it does so in plain words. Your own legal duties stay yours. A business with a legal question should ask a lawyer.

Start with the check. The Academy comes with membership.

Every member gets the core courses. Pillar and Keystone members get the full library, with the staff course seats their level needs.
