Share a concern
Start the conversation
If something happened with a halal-conscious business and you'd like us to take a closer look, this is the right place. You can tell us what happened in your own words. We'll read carefully, ask questions if needed, and handle your case with dignity and fairness.
You don't need perfect words and you don't have to know exactly what should happen next. Just start from what you experienced.
Private by design
- A concern is never published.
- Without your permission, we never name you to the business.
- If we can reach you, we acknowledge your concern within 2 business days.
- The concern form does not send what you write to an artificial intelligence service, so please use the form rather than email for a concern.
Before you begin
What to share, and what to expect from us
These points can help you decide what to share and what to expect from us.
What you can share
You can tell us about:
- Something you experienced at a halal-conscious business.
- A misunderstanding or conflict that needs clarity.
- A concern about how something was labeled or presented.
- Repeated issues that haven't been resolved.
- An HCC seal shown where it should not be, or a seal that does not match its record on the Register.
The more clearly you describe what happened, the better we can understand how to help. It's okay if you don't remember every detail.
What happens after you submit
Your case will be handled by our Case Management team. Until that team is formed, the people setting up HCC read each concern. We will:
- Read your story in full, not just skim it.
- Ask you questions if something is unclear.
- Contact the business when appropriate and listen to their side.
- Help both sides move toward a fair, halal-conscious solution.
We handle this calmly, privately, and respectfully for everyone involved.
Your choices come first
You decide what the business may know
The form asks your permission before we share anything. Here is what each choice means, so you can decide before you write.
-
Your name
Without your clear permission, given for this case, we never tell the business who you are. If a concern cannot be looked into without your name, we tell you and let you choose. If you say no, we look into what we can without it. This box shows only when you are signed in: signed out, we hold no name to share.
-
What you wrote
A separate box lets HCC share what you wrote with the business, without your name unless you allowed that too. Leave it unticked and we use what you wrote only inside HCC.
-
A reply
You can share a concern without an account, but then we cannot write back to you. For now, if you would like a reply, use the message form on the Contact page instead, with your email address.
-
The law
HCC cannot promise to keep a name private when a court, a regulator or the law requires it.
-
No retaliation
A business may not penalize anyone for making a report to HCC. A business that does may face a review of its seal.
Our role
What we can and cannot do
We will always be honest about what is and isn't within our role so we don't make promises we can't keep.
We can
- Listen carefully to what happened.
- Clarify details and help express what you're hoping for.
- Contact the business neutrally and gather their side.
- Encourage fair outcomes (refunds, fixes, apologies, policy changes).
- Help improve trust across the community.
- Re-check a place with the seal, and, after notice and a chance to appeal, withdraw a seal when trust is seriously broken.
We cannot
- Act as your lawyer or give legal advice.
- Force a business to do something outside our agreements.
- Handle emergencies. If anyone is in immediate danger, please call 911 or contact local emergency services.
- Issue religious rulings (fatāwā). We follow qualified scholars.
- Judge food safety. A credible report of illness or a health hazard is passed to the local health department.
The process
What the process looks like
Every situation is unique, but most cases move through these steps.
Urgent matters, such as a safety risk or a possible health hazard, move faster and may be handled outside this order.
Only a closed process can change the Register
A concern never changes a record by itself. If a case shows that a place with the seal no longer meets the Standard, the business gets written notice, 10 business days to respond, a decision with reasons, and a chance to appeal before any seal comes off. How we stay fair
-
You share what happened
You write in your own words. Tell us about anything you have that would help us see it, such as receipts, messages, screenshots or photos. You can add up to 5 photos or PDF files with the form. Only HCC staff working on your concern can open them, and every opening is logged. If we need to see another file, we ask and tell you how to send it.
-
We review your case
A case manager reads your case carefully and checks what else we might need to understand it well.
-
We may contact you
If something is unclear or missing, we reach out with simple follow-up questions.
-
We contact the business
We share a calm, neutral summary with the business and invite their response. We tell you when we have contacted them.
-
We explore options
Together we look for fair next steps: a fix, refund, apology, or other changes.
-
We close the case
We let you know the outcome and, where possible, what the business has agreed to do going forward. If we close a case without action, you may ask for a review within 10 business days; a panel of three people with no part in the case decides.
Ready to begin?
When you submit the form below, you'll start a private case with our team. Please share as much as you feel comfortable sharing. If we need more information, we'll reach out gently and clearly.
Share a concern
Tell us what happened, where and when, in your own words. You do not need perfect words or know what outcome to ask for. Concerns are never published.
What happens next: we review what you share, we may ask follow-up questions, we may contact the business, we look at the options, and we close the case and tell you how it ended. HCC does not judge food safety: a credible food safety report is passed to the local health department.
You can share a concern without an account, but then we cannot write back to you. If you would like a reply, use the message form on the Contact page instead, with your email address.
How cases work at Halal Community Council
A case is a structured way to look into a concern
A case is simply a structured way for us to look into a concern. It does not automatically mean anyone is "in trouble." It means we are taking what you shared seriously and following a clear process.
-
1
Listening first
We start by understanding your experience in your own words. We don't rush to judge anyone.
-
2
Checking the details
We look at dates, receipts, messages, and any other context you choose to share.
-
3
Contacting the business
We share a calm, neutral summary of your concern and invite the business to respond.
-
4
Exploring fair options
We look for ways to repair harm or misunderstanding: through refunds, fixes, apologies, or changes in practice.
-
5
Closing the case
Once it's clear what can be done, we close the case and let you know the outcome. When possible, we also share what the business is doing to prevent similar issues.
-
Ihsān
With care and balance
In all of this, we try to act with ihsān: doing what is right, with care and balance, for everyone involved.
Something else on your mind?
To check a place, search the Register. For a question or a suggestion, use the contact page. A line of its own for concerns about HCC itself opens when HCC's independent directors are seated, before the first check.
