HCC is getting ready to open. No place has been checked yet, and no seal has been issued. These pages describe how HCC's checks will work.

Work with HCC

Be the person who checks

HCC hires part-time checkers, first in Horry and Georgetown counties, South Carolina, and then wherever businesses ask to be checked. A checker visits restaurants, markets, butchers and caterers that asked to be checked, follows HCC's published Standard and a written checklist, and writes down what they saw, what they examined and what they were told.

Checkers are part-time employees, paid per visit. The pay is the same whatever the visit finds: no checker is ever paid more for a pass than for a fail.

Hired by an exam, never a faith test

HCC hires by a knowledge exam and a supervised visit. We never ask about your religion, your beliefs or your practice, and you do not need to be Muslim to do this work.

The work

What a checker does

Each check follows the Standard and a written checklist. A checker gets the facts right; a second reviewer reads every file, and a committee decides. A checker never tells a business whether it passed.

  • Before the visit

    Read the paperwork

Read the business's supplier invoices and certificates, and get the checklist ready.

  • At the business

    Look, match and ask

Visit in person or by live video call, announced and recorded in the open. Walk the coolers, freezers and dry storage, match box labels to the invoices, and ask staff five plain questions, the way a customer would.

  • After the visit

Write it down, with the date

Mark each fact as seen, observed or stated, and upload the photos, the recording and the notes within 24 hours. Photos show labels, documents and equipment, never customers.

Pay and hours

Paid per visit, the same whatever it finds

Checkers are part-time W-2 employees of HCC. Each visit pays the same whether the business passes or not.

  • In person

    $85 or $125 a visit

$85 for a Cornerstone visit and $125 for a Pillar or Keystone visit, which takes longer. The pay covers getting ready, the visit and the write-up.

  • Other visits

    $55, $85 or $45

$55 for a live video walkthrough, $85 for an unannounced follow-up visit, and $45 for a visit that ends early.

  • Driving

    Mileage paid back

Driving in your own car is paid back at the IRS standard business mileage rate, with a simple mileage log. It is not taxed.

  • Paid twice a month, on the 15th and the last day of the month, by bank transfer.
  • No more than 40 hours in a week. Driving between visits during the workday counts as work time, and HCC pays at least the minimum wage for every hour worked.
  • Use your own phone with HCC's visit screen. Photos and notes go straight to HCC, and you delete them from your phone after each visit.

How we hire

The same steps for every candidate

  1. Your application

The form below. It asks how to reach you, where you live, when you could do visits, whether you can drive to them, and what you have done before.

  2. A call and the knowledge exam

A short call about the job, then an exam on HCC's Standard and checklists. We send them to you a week ahead.

  3. An interview

Every candidate gets the same questions in the same order.

  4. A supervised visit

A practice visit while an HCC supervisor watches and scores it. You also list any ties to food businesses, suppliers or certifiers, so you never check a place you are close to.

What HCC never asks

Questions you will not be asked

  • We never ask about your religion, your beliefs or your practice.
  • We never ask you to eat anything, on a visit or in hiring.
  • We never ask about your age, your family, your health, or where you or your family come from.
  • Please do not send your Social Security number, copies of ID, photos of yourself, or anything about your health or religion. If we make an offer, we ask then for what the law requires.

HCC is an equal opportunity employer. We do not consider religion, race, color, national origin, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation and gender identity), age, disability, genetic information, veteran status or any other status protected by law in any hiring decision. If you need an accommodation to apply or to take the exam, say so in your application and we will work it out with you.

Apply to be a checker

Tell us how to reach you, where you live, when you could do visits and what you have done before. A council officer reads every application and writes back to the email address you give.

Send only what this form asks for. We ask for a resume only if we invite you to the next step.

The county you live in

Visits happen during opening hours, which include evenings and weekends. For example: weekday afternoons and Saturdays.

Do you have a driver's license and a car you can use for work?

In your own words. Leave it empty if you have not done this kind of work; the knowledge exam and a supervised visit are how HCC hires.
